5 Symptoms You Might Be Missing That Could Be Vision Problems

You’re passionate about helping your kids thrive. You work tirelessly to identify and address the root causes of developmental delays, learning struggles, and behavioral challenges. But what happens when progress stalls, or a child’s symptoms don’t improve despite your best efforts?

Many of these challenges could have an overlooked root cause: vision problems. And we’re not just talking about needing glasses. Functional vision issues—how the eyes work together and how the brain processes visual information—can create barriers that impact everything from reading to motor coordination and even emotional regulation.

As a pediatric and developmental optometrists, our team specializes in diagnosing and treating these often-hidden vision problems. My goal is to partner with you to provide a piece of the puzzle that might be missing from your child’s care plan. Together, we can create breakthroughs for children who are struggling to reach their potential.

Here are five symptoms that could indicate a vision problem—and how a referral to a developmental optometrist can help:

1. Difficulty Reading or Learning
Does your child loses their place while reading, skip words, or complain about blurry text? These are classic signs of eye-tracking issues, convergence insufficiency, or visual processing delays. Vision therapy can help strengthen these skills, making reading and learning more efficient and enjoyable.

2. Poor Coordination or Clumsiness
If a child struggles with hand-eye coordination, balance, or spatial awareness, it could stem from binocular vision problems. These issues affect how the eyes and brain work together to interpret depth and movement.

3. Behavioral or Emotional Challenges
Avoiding homework, frustration with schoolwork, or acting out during tasks requiring focus could be signs of visual discomfort. Children may not realize their vision is the issue; they just know the task is difficult and unpleasant.

4. Headaches or Fatigue
Frequent headaches, eye rubbing, or complaints of tired eyes after reading or screen time are red flags for undiagnosed vision issues. These symptoms often result from focusing problems or prolonged eye strain.

5. Lingering Symptoms After a Concussion
Many children experience light sensitivity, dizziness, or trouble focusing after a concussion. These symptoms are often linked to disruptions in the visual system, and neuro-optometric rehabilitation can provide targeted solutions.

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, let’s connect! I’d love to discuss how I can support you in helping your child thrive.
